The 90 minute drive to Palm Springs brought me through gorgeous mountains.
Breakfast at Cheeky’s was a must! A flight of bacon and eggs Benedict with. Mimosa chaser was a great start to the day.
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway was next on the list. Let’s discuss: Heights are not my thing but swinging from a rotating gondola of death is really NOT. MY. THING.
I made friends with two kids in their 20s who were going rock climbing. When I saw what they were carrying I asked how long they were going for…what I thought were sleeping mats were actually crash pads. Good Lord the Italian mother in me clenched and my anxiety about heights gave way to anxiety for their safety. I hope they’re ok. They promised me that they were leaving before dusk.
They also encouraged {read: shamed) me into the .75 mile loop at the base of a walking path even though I explained I was wearing Vans (and not my normal go to Vans but fancy ones that look like low esplanades). I mean three quarters of a mile. I can do that! I CANNOT DO THAT. I mean, I did and I lived but holy hell…what a hike. Thanks goodness the temperature at the top of the mountain was 68 degrees. The views made it totally worth it, and I hope it translates in the pictures.
A quick stop at the visitor’s center and then I drove around a bit snapping pics of the mid-century modern houses. So cool and kitschy. Most pics are fun houses that I just liked, but the notated ones I found thanks to Biking a Mid-Century Modern Tour in Palm Springs
Lucifer’s mistress, thy name is the sun! I don’t think I understood what the desert is. Vegas ain’t got nothing on Palm Springs. Walking the main drag of Palm Springs in 109 degrees …I now understand desert. In and out of shops, I spent a couple of hours meandering through shops, looking at the the Palm Spring Walk of Stars, and checking out some statues.
One thing on the main drag that needs some extra explanation is the Starbucks Reserve. From The Tasting Table, Starbucks Reserve coffees use specialty beans from relatively unknown sources such as family-run coffee farms or ancient estate plantations. There are only six true Starbuck Reserves and although this is not one of them, it does have Reserve Coffee.
At the behest of my friend from the visitor center, I went to Tropicale for a drink and then Rooster and The Pig for dinner — a stylish, industrial-chic eatery serving ambitious riffs on Vietnamese fare.
