When the Hollywoodland sign was erected in 1923 the developer was concerned about walkability in the steep hillside community. They used granite from the nearby Bronson Quarry (The Bat Cave from Adam West’s Batman) to construct staircases to make the community more accessible by foot.
If you are going to do anything like this here are few tips:
- Beechwood Drive has amazing views of the Hollywood sign so park, and carefully run out to the middle of the road for a great picture — BE SAFE!!!!
- Park before the Stone Gates cause after it’s all permit parking.
- Bring water…like no joke. BRING WATER! There is a store by the gates that you will pass a couple of times, so you can buy water (like me), but be smarter than me and BRING WATER!
In two hours because of backtracking with the third staircase and getting turned around for the sixth, I did a total of 1,100 stairs. Pics are from the different staircases, houses along the route, and views! Also, I am obsessed with doorways…you’ll see.
Start at The Stone Gates of Hollywood – Sabrina and I stumbled upon these in 2019. After that I did research; when the Hollywoodland development was planned, these gates were the supposed to be guardhouses.
Stair One — 143 steps Beachwood to Westshire
Stair Two— 149 steps Westshire to Hollyridge
Staircase Tree was closed
Staircase Four was beautiful — 148 steps WoodShire to Belden
Staircase Five — 118 steps — Belden to Durand I think that was my favourite section with views of Griffith Observatory, a Norman Style château, resevoir, and an original Hollywoodland sign!
Staircase Six — 125 steps — Woodshire to Belden (again but in a different spot)- In trying to get here, it all sort of fell apart. I got wicked turned around so it should have been Belden to Woodshire, but oh well.
Once I got to the top of these stairs, I turned around and went back down and got myself back to the hotel to collapse…
