Disclaimer – This is unlike any other itinerary I have done, so these are turn-by-turn directions across the country with where to stop. There are a few left/right mistakes and the transposition of two street names in Pittsburgh before the Roberto Clemente Bridge, so they are NOT 100% correct. They were used in conjunction with the Lincoln Highway Association’s online map linked here. The below is saved by on an excel spreadsheet with colour-coding… just in case… you actually want these ever. I also have daily lessons and worksheets if anyone were to ever need anything 🙂

Also, due to weather conditions, we did not drive through Skull Valley on Day 13. You really should not attempt the valley if there is current rain, recent rain, or any rain in the forecast, so although I’m a ton of fun, I do take Hunter and my safety very seriously, so although it really broke my heart not to drive the route that took me literally over 24 hours to plot and plan, we went around it and saw The Bonneville Salt Flats instead.

Just always remember… plan, plan, plan, but don’t be precious about the plans. Things happen and change, sometimes you just have to be like Steve Winwood and roll with it. Not all of this was completed! The amount of things I drove past is gob smacking! But as Hunter says, it’s ok!

  This replica 1928 LH Marker was built by Dick Taylor of Mansfield, Ohio, and dedicated on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 by
  the Ohio Chapter of the Lincoln Highway Association, as part of the the Lincoln Highway Centennial Tour celebration
  that came through Mansfield on that day.
  The street bricks at the base of the marker came from the Lincoln Highway on Fourth Street in Mansfield, next to the
  old Westinghouse plant “E” building. The bricks had been salvaged in 1960 by Richard and Marilyn Gilger, parents of
  LHA Mapping Committee Chair Paul Gilger. The Gilgers used the bricks for a backyard patio at their home on
  Kenmore Drive in Ontario, west of Mansfield. The Gilgers sold their home in 2006, with the understanding that the
  new owner would notify the Gilgers if they decided to replace the patio. The patio bricks were subsequently salvaged
  by Dick and Mary Lou Taylor and the LHA Ohio Chapter in 2012 and kept in storage at the Taylor residence until the
  installation at this location in 2013.

  headquarters. Passenger trains northeast from the station headed to Cleveland. Trains southwest from the station
  headed to Indianapolis and St. Louis; trains headed south from the station to Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati.
  Peak usage occurred during and after World War I, with about 32 trains a day stopping there. Major political party

The Chinese House
Beginning in 1992, homeowner Mark A. Reed transformed his 1950s suburban
home into what the locals call The Chinese House.
Address:

Directions: I-57 exits 340 or 340A. Drive east on US Hwy 30 for three miles. The
house will be on the right, at the corner of Orchard Drive. Look for the golden yellow
roof. Private property; visible from the street.

Legend of the Chinese House
Each day hundreds of Lincoln Highway travelers take note of the house with the
golden yellow roof at Orchard Drive, the entrance to the Village of Park Forest. The
common speculation is the home was created for its Chinese owners, a myth, as
the urban legend continues. The truth: an African American transformed the
exterior of the home to complement the home’s interior designed with international
themed rooms. A message board arch above the garage with diAerent messages
posted each week are to challenge the traveler to “THINK.” The international flags in
the front yard represent some of the international countries the owner created
themes for in the interior spaces.
Owner Mark A. Reed moved into the house in 1981 and began its exterior
transformation in 1992.

  This is one of the oldest buildings in Potter. It used to be the home of Potter State Bank (Different charter from the
  current “The Potter State Bank of Potter”). Potter State Bank moved their building south down the Lincoln Highway
  one lot and built a new brick bank now known as the Potter Public Library.
  The building is considered one of the three buildings in town that have ‘traveled the Lincoln Highway.” This building
  has been a print shop, arcade, senior center just to name of few. It is now Public Restrooms and a visitor information
  center. It is ADA compliant. Boasted as one of the cleanest restrooms on interstate 80 and the Lincoln Highway.
  🎨Coyote Caller (Historic Potter State Bank) – The first of two locations for The Potter State Bank of Potter. This
  building houses two murals painted by a Native American named Chief Broken Rope in the early 1900’s. The historic
  mosaic tile and original teller line is still in place as well as the bank vaults. The ad for the Citizens State Bank can be
  seen on the 1918 curtain currently being used in productions at the Sefang Hall/Legion Hall.

  BUFORD, WY – POPULATION 1 – Don Sammons moved to Buford in 1980 with his wife and son. In 1992, he
  purchased the town. His wife died in 1995, and his son moved away around 2007, making him Buford’s only resident.
  The town, consisting of a convenience store, gas station, and modular home on 4 hectares (9.9 acres) of land, was
  put up for sale after Sammons decided to move closer to his son. The town was put up for auction on April 5, 2012,
  with the highest bid of $900,000 by two unidentified Vietnamese men. Later, it was revealed that one of them was

Sand Mountain is a huge sand dune east of Fallon, Nevada. It is now a BLM recreation area with a rather steep $20
fee (honor system) for 7 days visit, but who can pass it by without stopping? It is a huge sand dune system topping
out at reportedly 400 feet. It is very fine sand, wonderful to walk on early in the morning before it gets too hot. I went
there at 1 pm in the middle of August — the sand was very hot and it took me 30 minutes to climb to the top of one of
the lesser peaks. Yes, I took a bottle of water with me even though you think it’s just a little jaunt — the problem is
that the jaunt is much bigger than it looks when a cubic foot of sand comes down on top of your feet at every step.
ATV’s are permitted around the base of it and on marked trails in the vicinity. It has a brick outhouse, but that’s it for
facilities. On the nearby 4 Mile Flats and 8 Mile Flats people have written their names in black stones along both
sides of the highway; hundreds of them. Also nearby is the Sand Station of the Pony Express. This dune has been
here for a LONG time!

Historic Overland Hotel & Saloon
The historic Overland Hotel was built in 1908 by Dan Griffith, a local pioneer. George Sherman, a popular politician
and civic leader, was the establishments’ second owner, and is credited with putting the hotel “on the map.”
Sherman served as Fallon’s Mayor from 1911 to 1915, followed by a term as state assemblyman. During his tenure
as owner, Sherman played an integral part in originating Fallon’s electric company as well as Churchill County’s
telephone system.
Located on the Lincoln Highway, the Overland became the destination of all walks of life: from ditch diggers and
local ranchers, to politicians, civic leaders and weary travelers. In addition, the Newlands Reclamation Project, the
first federal irrigation project in the US, was underway. Also known as “Uncle Sam’s Nine Million Dollar Farm,” the
project brought prosperity and population to the Lahontan Valley, making the Overland a popular stopping place.
The hotel was recognized as Fallon’s finest.
As the years passed the Overland had a series of owners, who altered the interior design and decor. After a 24 year
ownership by Carol Harper, George Machado purchased the hotel in May of 1996. George a long time Fallon resident
was fascinated by the brick structure and began the Overland’s restoration to its original state.

This is the location of the Great Stage Coach Robbery, a famous robbery of two coaches of the Pioneer Stage Line
running between Virginia City, Nevada and Sacramento, California, on June 30, 1864 at about 10 PM. The stolen gold
and money was meant to fund recruiting for the Confederacy. The bandits were captured and then hanged in
Placerville (formerly known as Hangtown) on September 29, 1865.

The Square, formerly known as Pioneer Village, is a historically inspired makerspace allowing visitors to try their
hands at gold panning and witness a working blacksmith forge in action (visitors can sign up for public
classes/workshops hosted throughout the year). In addition, visitors are encouraged to explore a miner’s cabin and
a genuine Southern Pacific Railroad caboose, and, in the future, participate in maker activities in Ashland Station –
self-guided and at their own pace.

Chapter’s “The Traveler” newletter: It has been a tradition within the California Chapter to involve the Boy Scouts of
America with the placement of reproduction LH Markers. It is fitting to continue this tradition which began in
September of 1928 with the placement of approximately 3,000 markers along the route of the Lincoln Highway by
the Boy Scouts of America. For the past several years, scouts have been directly involved in the casting of these
replicas. This was the case when Life Scout, Zachary Parker, approached the Chapter inquiring about the possibility
of creating a replica marker for his Eagle Scout project. President, Joel Windmiller and member Scott Miner had
previously created a new mold, replacing the original created by Past President Norm Root, to cast two markers for
the Eagle Scout project of Nathan Baluguy. A marker placed at the Ophir Road Monument was also cast from this
mold. So with the new mold awaiting the opportunity to create yet another quality reproduction. Joel, Zachary and
members of Rancho Cordova Troup #363 began work in November, 2015. The finished marker was installed,
December 14, 2015, on the corner of Sunrise and Folsom Blvd’s. in Rancho Cordova. An Eagle Scout Court of Honor
was held in the American River Grange, on April 23, 2106, where Zachary received his prestigious award.
