I pulled up to the gate ten minutes early, and was quickly told that I was 24 hours and ten minutes early…yeah, I cried. Like full on cried because we were day two into out 18 day Route 66 adventure and I feared for what else I had screwed up, and Hunter really wanted to see wolves. Within ten minutes, my extreme earliness was solved, and we received a wonderful private tour! There is not enough I can say about the staff here!

The Center was founder by Marlin Perkins of “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” fame. On the edge of extinction, every Mexican gray wolf in the wild can trace his or her roots back to the Center. Their current focus is on the American red wolf which at the time of our visit in August of 2022 had less than 20 individuals left in the wild, the American red wolf is the rarest large carnivore in the United States, and the most critically endangered wolf in the entire world. Current check on Nov 11, 2023, the number left in the wild are 35!
