The Metropolitan Museum of Art is an incredible building housing various art from all over the world through time. Sitting on 5th Avenue on the east side of Central Park, The Met has always held a special place in my brain. Featured in one of the all-time great movies, When Harry Met Sally, and more recently, Oceans 8, I don’t remember the first time I ever went to The Met, but in the ’80’s I took my niece one summer, and we spent hours looking at paintings and getting lost between installations. Recently, I got an idea that Hunter would LOVE to see the Temple of Dendur… no idea why it struck me other than I have always thought it was amazing that an actual Egyptian temple was INSIDE a building. So on a gorgeous spring day, we headed out to the Upper East Side to spend a few hours and only scratch the surface of all that there is to see!
I also tried to make the visit very accessible for Hunter, so we watched a few videos before going which I am linking below, and I printed the Family Guides that The Met offers for Free. If I had thought about it, I would have cut them up to make them a more manageable size, but it was a fun scavenger hunt type activity that kept Hunter’s interest.
- “Don’t Eat The Pictures” – a night at the museum type Sesame Street movie from the 80’s when everyone thought Snuffy was still an imaginary friend.
- Smart History – The Temple of Dendur – a fast six-minute overview of The Temple of Dendur.
- Kensington TV – Tour of the Temple of Dendur – An even faster three-minute tour.
PS – almost every pic has a link back to The Met
Let’s start this day!
I saw a similar mosaic at The Getty Villa
so much more massive than I ever imagined!
There were several areas that were without crowding and much quieter than European Paintings and the Egyptian Exhibits.
European Paintings 1250-1800 — Apparently, I only took pictures of two of our favourites.
