In 2004, I was teaching high school English in New York and I was approached to direct the musical. Although I loved Broadway, had been in two high school musicals, and had a dance minor listed on my college transcripts (even though I was three credits shy) I had no idea how to direct. But I took on the challenge, figuring the worst that would happen was I would be fired.
My first challenge was to pick a show. I don’t remember exactly how I came to one upon Once Upon a Mattress, but directing that show was the most amazing experience!
So when my niece Elizabeth, better known as The Pretty One, told me there was a limited run with one of my all-time favorites, Sutton Foster, we quickly decided on our mutual birthday gift!
Once we crossed into the actual theater and I saw the backdrop, I was completely overcome, my chest tightened, and the tears started.
Adapted by Amy Sherman-Palladino O-M-G), Foster was joined by Will Chase, Ana Gasteyer, and Michael Urie. Sleep masks waited for us on our chairs as we arrived for opening night of previews!
Joyous show!
